Oncofertility in Peru

Colleagues in Peru recently hosted a successful course on fertility preservation and are pleased to announce the opening of their first laboratory in Lima, Peru. See the post below from Dr. Flor Sanchez, who is one of the oncofertility ambassadors in Peru.


Fertility Preservation Course in Cancer Patients and Inauguration of the first Research Laboratory of Reproductive Biology and Fertility Preservation in Lima, Peru.

The Fertility preservation course in cancer patients was held on October 11, 2017, in the auditorium of the building “Laboratorios de Investigación y Desarrollo, LID” at “Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia” (UPCH). This event was co-organized by Dr. Johan Smitz, Dr Sergio Romero and Dr. Flor Sánchez, together with the Peruvian Fertility Society, being a pre-congress course of the XVIII Peruvian Congress of Reproductive Medicine.

The objectives of the course were:
- Provide and exchange knowledge on techniques of assisted human reproduction, focused on fertility preservation in cancer patients (Oncofertility).
- Provide new approaches in the field of Oncofertility, promoting the best performance of clinical and research activities for the benefit of the patient.
- To create a collaborative research platform in the field of fertility preservation.

This was an excellent event, in which outstanding national and international reproductive researchers and clinical oncologist participated. Among them, Dr. Alison Ting, Dr. Michael Grynberg, Dr. Johan Smitz, Dr. Diego Venegas, Dr. Ivan Maza, Dr. Nadya Manrique, Dr. Sergio Romero, Dr. Flor Sánchez, Biol. Ricardo Pella and Prof. Luisa Echevarría.   

Furthermore, at the end of a full day of excellent scientific conferences, the Belgian Ambassador Sr. Koenraad Lenaerts and the Vice-rector of Research Dr. Alejandro Bussalleu inaugurated the new research “Laboratory of Reproductive Biology and Fertility Preservation” in the same building (LID, UPCH). The lab team: Dr. Johan Smitz, MD PhD (Belgium), Dr. Sergio Romero, PhD (Peru) and Dr. Flor Sanchez, PhD (Peru), are top researchers in the field and were happy to announce that this laboratory is unique in its type in Latin America, and aim to perform basic and translational research and focus its activities on development of strategies that help to preserve and restore the fertility of cancer patients following oncological treatments.
